PROCEED - Pathway to Renewable Off-Grid Community Energy for Development (BMBF-CLIENT II)

Structured analysis of existing off-grid systems - The way to a sustainable energy supply for remote areas in Namibia

Description:

The overall objective of PROCEED is to improve the situation of the population in remote areas that have no access to electricity or adequate energy infrastructure. In accordance with the focus of the funding measure, the application-oriented joint project PROCEED in Namibia investigates innovative and sustainable solutions in the field of efficient and sustainable energy systems. The core is the use of energy which is adequate, available when needed, reliable, of high quality, affordable, legal, healthy and safe. Therefore, suitable options for the design of renewable energy (RE) based models of energy supply via island grids are to be developed, which meet the local needs and social context, are technically up-to-date, economically viable, easy to maintain and therefore sustainable in the long run.

With its integrated approach, the PROCEED project aims at linking technology and service developments in the context of economy, society and environment in order to best advise and support Namibia's national development strategy. This will be done in close coordination with, and with the involvement of, local actors (those who are part of the project consortium and beyond) and internationally funded initiatives.

Based on analyses regarding structures, practices and adaptation capacities in the selected local communities (see work package (WP) 1 - "Mini-Grid Community - University of Bayreuth), the regulatory environment for payment systems and business models (see WP 2 - "Mini-Grid Economics" - TH Neu-Ulm), as well as the technical conditions of the three selected, already existing mini-grids (see WP 3 - "Mini-Grid Technology - TH Ingolstadt), concepts and recommendations for action for the optimization of rural electrification projects will be developed. In order to achieve these goals, 20 concretely measurable project milestones were defined (see sub-project descriptions). In the PROCEED project, structured cooperation and feedback with local actors is of particular importance.

Based on this, the present overall project contributes to the development and implementation of technologies, system solutions and services in the field of rural electrification in Namibia with a radiating effect for the Sub-Saharan Africa region (SSA). The focus of the PROCEED project within the BMBF research program CLIENT II is on "Sustainable Energy Systems".
