MemoriAmefricana takes viewers on a journey through the creative encounters between artists of African descent from Cartagena de Indias and Salvador da Bahia - two historic centers of the African diaspora. In collaboration with partners from Cameroon, Germany, and Mozambique, the project explores how new paths toward reinvention, re-existence, and shaping the future can emerge from the remnants of colonialism, racism, sexism, and violence.

Through workshops, choreography, music, dance, and collaborative mapping, a polyphonic search for an inclusive future emerges—inspired by the concept of “Amefrica,” as articulated by Lélia Gonzalez: the deep, often rendered invisible African and Indigenous traces that shape Latin America.

The film illustrates how art functions as a medium of resistance, how communities grow together across national borders, and how the diaspora—in all its diversity, yet united by shared historical experiences and cultural strength—opens up new perspectives.

On July 9 at 6:30 p.m., Valerie V. V. Gruber’s documentary “MemoriAmefricana – Cartagena de Indias/Salvador da Bahia” will be screened at the Unikino in the Geomatikum in Hamburg (with english subtitles). She produced the film together with Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Dias and the international action research team.
